SAY ‘NO’ TO NEW LABOUR’S EXPANSION OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

The Government has given the go-ahead for a new generation of nuclear power stations saying the case for investing in nuclear was” compelling”.

It might be “compelling” for New Labour and their big business supporters but it is also potentially devastating for the environment as well as posing an enormous threat to future generations.

Even today, there remains no known safe method of disposing of nuclear waste which can last for over 100,000 years.

The possibility of a terrorist attack on a nuclear plant releasing deadly radiation into the atmosphere will always be present under capitalism, along with the risk of a catastrophic accident such as that at Chernobyl. Because radioactive rain from Chernobyl fell onto North Wales there are still radiation test being taken on livestock there today, even though that disaster was over 20 years ago, Socialists argue that safe forms of renewable energy needs to developed urgently and the technology exists to do this now.

Workers in the nuclear industry could be redeployed to decommissioning the existing nuclear plants and to safe forms of energy creation such as using bio fuels, solar and wind power. 250,000 jobs could be created if the resources proposed for nuclear were diverted to renewables and there would be a larger cut in carbon emissions.

Come to our meeting and hear a programme on the environment that firmly rejects the nuclear option and stands for a massive injection of resources into developing renewable energy.
