Report: UCU Wales Strike
16th April 2008Alec Thraves spoke to UCU strikers on the two picket lines at Gorseinon College near Swansea.
'Our dispute is really about lecturers pay because our employers are refusing to honour our nationally agreed pay scales.
We had a new pay scale agreed last year and for the first time in many years lecturers in every Welsh college were paid for doing the same job. What has happened this year is that colleges are not allowing experienced lecturers to progress to the top of the salary scale despite having the funds in their budgets to do so.
On top of this action colleges will not provide assurances that our pay agreement will be honoured in future years. No wonder our members are angry and have responded well today. We are frustrated that we are not out next week with the teachers and other public sector workers who are facing the same uncertainty and cuts as us. we are determined to make sure our agreement is met in full'!
