Anti-Cuts Candidates Contest Swansea Council Elections

8th April 2012

Swansea Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition / TUSC Against Cuts

The millionaires have their coalition... Now it's time for a coalition of working class people!

The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) is standing four anti-cuts candidates in the Swansea council elections on May 3rd.

Les Woodward, 'Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition' candidate for Gowerton ward

Les is the national trade union convener for Remploy and a Socialist Party member.

"I am in the fight of my life at the moment because this ConDem government want to close 54 Remploy factories including our Swansea plant, throwing disabled workers onto the scap heap with little chance of getting another job. I am standing for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition because I have always fought against injustice and believe we should refuse to pay the price for a government crisis that was caused by billionaire bankers, spivs and speculators!"

Ronnie Job, 'Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition' candidate for Sketty Ward

Ronnie is a UNISON shop steward, Secretary of Swansea Trades Union Council and a Socialist Party member.

"As Swansea Council passes on Tory cuts, services are cut and ordinary people suffer, while the jobs of the workers who provide those services are threatened and their terms and conditions ripped up. I am standing for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition because I believe councillors should refuse to implement all cuts. We must mobilise trade unions and communities to demand the resources we need for the proper functioning of our local services".

Martin White, 'Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition' candidate for Castle ward

Martin is a long standing Swansea anti-cuts and NHS campaigner and a Socialist Party member.

"The ConDem government is determined to privatise and destroy the NHS in England and in Wales the Labour-led Welsh government is carrying out bigger cuts than anywhere else in the UK! Local NHS campaigns are springing up across Wales as anti-cuts campaigners fight to prevent the closures of hospitals, A&E facilities and wards. I am standing for the 'Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition' because I believe in defending our NHS from the cuts of all the main parties".

Rob P. Williams, 'Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition' candidate for Sketty ward

Rob is a prominent anti-cuts campaigner in Swansea and a member of the Socialist Party.

"I live in Sketty ward, which is home to a large number of the university's student population. Labour introduced tuition fees and the ConDems have hiked them up to an incredible £9,000 a year for the many English students who study at Swansea. The average graduate debt, after 3 years in University, is estimated to become £50,000, with many students then joining the 1 million young people already unemployed! I am standing for the 'Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition' because I want young people to have real jobs and a future without massive student debt".

TUSC pledges to:

At the council elections on May 3rd, ask yourself: "Why should we pay for the banker's crisis?"
