From a Swansea Trades Council press release:

Swansea Trades Council offers full support to Fire Brigades Union  (FBU) in resisting all cuts to fire and rescue services.

Swansea Trades Council invites all trade unionists concerned about cuts to fire and rescue services to join us for our next meeting, which will be open to the public.

Wednesday, 19th June
Dyfatty Community Centre, 7:30pm
Defend Fire & Rescue Services

Fire and rescue services are being cut, threatening the jobs and terms of fire-fighters but also their safety and the safety of the public they serve.

Speaking at Swansea Trades Council’s May Day Rally, Cerith Griffiths (Chair of FBU Cymru) explained that in Llanelli there had been reductions in staffing levels and that in parts of Wales, vans with a smaller load of water and one less fire-fighter, are replacing fire engines.

Swansea Trades Council delegates have therefore invited Cerith to come and explain further about these cuts, the on-going attacks on fire-fighters’ pensions and about what assistance other trade  unionists might be able to give to the FBU in fighting cuts to the service they provide.

We are also interested in hearing about the positive things the FBU has been doing to try to outline an alternative to cuts and austerity, like promoting the idea of nationalising the banks. The FBU has produced a pamphlet on this issue and successfully moved a resolution committing the TUC to this policy at the last Trades Union Congress.

Given the importance of this issue, the Trades Council delegates have decided to open this meeting up to the public.
