Stop Coastguard Cuts!
20th August 2013
The Swansea and Gower coast is one of the most beautiful places in the country at this time of year and attracts huge numbers of visitors. But visiting this part of the country and enjoying the beautiful coastline is a lot more hazardous this year.
The Coastguard's ability to provide the essential service to keep people safe is severely compromised by being understaffed according to the PCS union, with 13 rescue coordinators working out of the Swansea centre, instead of the 22 there should be.
Swansea is not the only coordination centre that is understaffed and you don't have to look far to find the reason why the Coastguard Agency is having problems recruiting and retaining staff.
9 out of the 19 coordination centres around the country are earmarked for closure, including Swansea. Coastguard coordinators have no confidence in the governments plans, which, as well as cuts to number of centres include crucially the loss of local knowledge by routing calls, via a single contact centre, to the first available rather than the local coordination centre.
These are cuts that threaten to kill. Fight all coastguard cuts.
