Letter: Non-Binary Election Campaign
30th April 2015
I was pleased to see the large number of Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) general election candidates pledging their support for the Non-binary Election Campaign (http://ppc.uktrans.info/).
This campaign aims to extend the the Equality Act and Gender Recognition Act to protect the 250,000 non-binary people in the UK (individuals whose gender identiy is not strictly male or female) from discrimination in the workplace or in accessing services.
Socialists would go further than legal equality, starting with a mass council house building programme, the reversal of cuts to services, increased funding for mental health and the immediate introduction of a £10/hour minimum wage. These are issues vitally important to LGBT people who are disproportionately likely to experience homelessness or mental health difficulties, or to Trans and Black & Minority Ethnic LGBT people who are vastly more likely to experience low pay and poverty.
A new workers' party can fight for actual, material, LGBT equality and challenge immigration controls that are institutionally homophobic and transphobic as well as racist. Vote TUSC!
